South west public health laboratory: services
The public health laboratory for the south west region is based in Bristol.
Public health laboratory Bristol provides diagnostic and clinical microbiology services to the NHS and others as well as specialist and health protection microbiology services to the region. It is one of the biggest and most complex diagnostic laboratories in the country.
The Bristol laboratory houses the National Mycology Reference Laboratory. The south west region is also home to the Primary Care Unit which produces national guidance on the investigation and management of infections in the primary care health sector and undertakes related research and development.
The laboratory is based at Southmead Hospital in Bristol.
