The Midlands public health laboratory: services

The public health laboratory for the Midlands is based in Birmingham.

The Birmingham laboratory is home to:

  • the National Mycobacteria Reference Service (NMRS- Central &North) and provides:
    • tuberculosis screening and diagnosis for the east and west Midlands
    • TB Whole genome sequencing identification, sensitivities and epidemiology for Central and North
  • the antiviral unit (AVU), the national testing facility for the HIV and herpes viruses

The Birmingham microbiology laboratory is also part of the Clostridium difficile Ribotyping Network (CDRN) service for England.

The laboratory provides a full range of laboratory tests. View a list of general clinical tests available from the majority of Public Health England regional microbiology laboratories. Please call the laboratory to confirm test availability.
