Grade of officer

An award of costs against the claimant should be dealt with under the direct and close supervision of a higher debt manager.

Costs awarded against the claimant

If, in the course of proceedings, costs are awarded against the claimant by the court, you would not normally challenge the court’s order.

Challenging the award

If exceptionally you think the costs should be challenged, consult your line manager.

Making payment

You should

  • make the payment through the ERP system
  • prepare a letter addressed to the court manager, the defendant or his solicitor (as appropriate). The letter should say that ‘under the order made on (date) in the (name of court) County Court a payable order in payment of costs awarded against the claimant will be issued separately by Finance, Worthing’.
  • get the letter signed by a higher debt manager or officer of equivalent grade
  • keep a copy in the office with supporting documentation for audit purposes.
