Caribbean sargassum: advancing commercial, scalable processing or storage

Closed: the FCDO invited research proposals by 10 October 2023 for the Evidence Fund's advancing commercial, scalable processing or storage of Caribbean sargassum.

This opportunity closed on 10 October 2023.

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) invites proposals for research proposals that will:

  • advance knowledge on the viability of business models that profitably extract value from sargassum, or
  • turn sargassum into a carbon store

Non-profit and commercial organisations working towards the development objectives specified by Official Development Assistance (ODA) funding can apply.

What the fund will achieve

A growing influx of sargassum seaweed threatens the Caribbean’s marine ecosystems, economy and public health. Advancing commercial, scalable, safe solutions to process, sink or store sargassum could be vital to the Caribbean’s sustainable development. Caribbean government leaders have asked the UK government for support with research into existing and future business models, seeking economic benefits from its sustainable processing and storage.

How to apply

Email your technical and commercial proposal to the Evidence Fund manager [email protected] by 11:59pm British Summer Time (BST) on 10 October 2023.

The procurement mechanism for this initiative will be a Service Accountability Agreement. The FCDO will agree deliverables with preferred bidders during the contract negotiation phase, building on researchers’ proposals.
