Reversing Environmental Degradation in Africa and Asia (REDAA) wetland modelling in Sri Lanka
Closed: the Reversing Environmental Degradation in Africa and Asia (REDAA) programme invited applications by 4 September 2023 to evaluate the function and economic value of wetland ecosystem services in the Kalu Oya Basin in Sri Lanka.
This opportunity closed on 4 September 2023.
Overview
The Reversing Environmental Degradation in Africa and Asia (REDAA) programme is working in partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Ogata Research Institute to deliver a research project on economic wetland ecosystem services in the Colombo Metropolitan Region.
This project is intended to evaluate the economic values of wetland ecosystem services in urban and peri-urban contexts (specifically, the Kalu Oya Basin) with a view to encouraging actions to conserve, restore and sustainably use wetlands under a changing climate.
What the fund will achieve
The project will evaluate the function and economic value of wetland ecosystem services in the Kalu Oya basin in the Colombo Metropolitan Region, Sri Lanka, using computational models. This will contribute to understanding wetland function under a range of future exogenous uncertainties, associated with projected future climate change. The project will contribute to and support the JICA Ogata Research Institute project to:
- analyse long-term effects of climate change on the urban flood damages
- evaluate the effectiveness of various flood mitigation measures in terms of climate change adaptation
- identify implications for the implementation through an application of a Robust Decision Making (RDM) framework
Project outputs will include:
- evaluation of the economic values and function of wetland ecosystems in Kalu Oya Basin
- public-facing communication materials to help local stakeholders understand how climate change will impact wetland function
- public-facing communication materials on how to use wetland ecosystem function and valuation models

Background information on the fund
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office’s (FCDO) Climate, Energy, Environment and Water Research Team is working together with the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) in implementing a research-to-action programme – Reversing Environmental Degradation in Africa and Asia (REDAA).
REDAA is focused on addressing the challenge of environmental degradation in Africa and Asia by improving the condition of ecosystems and natural landscapes in ways that enable people and nature to thrive together and build resilience to the impacts of climate change.
REDAA will expand the technical knowledge and evidence base, and includes a grant-making facility that supports initiatives putting research into action, for environmental restoration and sustainable natural resources management in Africa and Asia.
