Working for British Embassy Bangkok

General information

The British Embassy in Bangkok employs both UK and locally employed staff. The Embassy is keen to recruit outstanding people to join our team.

Student internship programme

What is the Student Internship Programme?

The British Embassy Bangkok offers occasional short term (up to 3 months) student internships. The internships provide an exciting opportunity to work alongside Embassy staff in our Commercial, Consular, Political, Visa, or Management Sections.

What would I be doing?

These placements offer candidates the challenge of working alongside Embassy staff, conducting research, writing reports, undertaking translation, and providing administrative support. Candidates would usually be allocated to a particular section, but have the opportunity to see the work of the rest of the Embassy.

When do the placements take place?

The recruitment take place when there is an appropriate project arises for intern to take on at the Embassy. Placements are usually from 1 to 3 months duration up to a maximum of 119 days. All Intern positions are advertised and positions awarded on merit.

UK-based students interested in an internship or work experience should first read the information available on the working for FCDO page of the FCDO website.

We do not arrange ad-hoc or unpaid work experience, internships or job shadowing for individuals. Neither do we enter into arrangements with individual academic, or other, institutions, which may prevent other eligible applicants from accessing our opportunities. This is to make sure that we comply with the British Government’s policy of ensuring all opportunities offered are accessible and available to all, and not just those with relevant contacts.

Do I get paid?

Unfortunately, intern is not a salaried position, but successful candidates will receive a small daily allowance.

What are the eligibility criteria?

To be eligible you must be a College or University student, or recent graduate. As we are unable to provide assistance with work permits you must be a Thai citizen or permanent resident, or hold a valid work permit.

Candidates must have a strong command of written and spoken English, be well motivated, have good communication skills and be comfortable working independently. A knowledge of Thai language is also useful.

Furthermore, to enable the appropriate security checks to be carried out, you must have resided for at least three consecutive years in one country. All applicants must be aware that a lack of sufficient background information may preclude an applicant from being granted clearance.

How do I apply?

Internship opportunities will be advertised on the Embassy’s website. As fair competition is at the centre of recruitment at the Embassy, we do not maintain a database of potential candidates, we cannot accept applications on a speculative basis, and are unable to hold CVs on file to be considered for future vacancies.

Civil Services Competences and the selection process

Selection is based on the overall suitability of the candidate against the skills, qualifications and competences required in the position, as may be demonstrated by applicants through the application form and the interview. The specific requirements for each position can be found in the job advertisement/description.
