UK Science and Innovation Network in Malaysia
The Science and Innovation Network promotes and facilitates international collaboration in research and innovation.
Science and innovation are at the heart of government strategy for promoting prosperity and growth. Research and knowledge is increasingly developed and transferred through international collaboration which provides opportunities to work with the best in the world, exchange students and researchers, and gain access to large scale international facilities; leading to mutual benefits for UK and Malaysia.
To promote international collaboration the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office jointly fund the UK Science and Innovation Network (SIN), based in 40 countries around the world.
For an introductory brief which covers the local Science and Innovation landscape, UK priorities and successes in Malaysia, read the UK Science and Innovation Network country snapshot.

Opportunities
UK-Malaysia Science and Innovation Partnership
UK- Malaysia cooperation on science and innovation has developed through the UK-Malaysia Partners in Science programme, initiated in 2007 to mark the 50th anniversary of Malaysia’s independence. The partnership was further strengthened in 2011 when Sir John Beddington, then UK Government Chief Scientific Advisor issued a joint statement with the Malaysian Prime Minister’s science advisor, Professor Tan Sri Zakri bin Abdul Hamid.
The Newton Fund now forms the focus of engagement on science and innovation with Malaysia and is presenting major new opportunities for joint work. A Memorandum of Understanding for the joint Newton-Ungku Omar Programme, identifying joint UK-Malaysia funding of up to £8million per year, was signed in August 2014.
Priorities
Our engagement with Malaysia on science and innovation has been wide ranging covering a broad range of thematic areas. We leverage various programmes to support our work including the Global Partnership Fund (GPF), the Newton Fund, Prosperity Fund, the EU-funded international cooperation project ‘SEA-EU-NET II’ and the UK-Southeast Asia Knowledge Partnership.
Our current priorities include:
- future Cities
- health and life sciences
- agri-technology
Our services
