The Science and innovation network engages with the local science & innovation community in support of UK policy overseas and also create strategic relationships.

Science and innovation are at the heart of government strategy for promoting prosperity and growth. Research and knowledge is increasingly developed and transferred through international collaboration which provides opportunities to work with the best in the world, exchange students and researchers, and gain access to large scale international facilities; leading to mutual benefits for UK and India.

For an introductory brief which covers the local Science and Innovation landscape, UK priorities and successes in India, read the UK Science and Innovation Network Country Snapshot.

Responsibilities

To promote international collaboration on Science and Innovation, Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office jointly fund the UK Science and Innovation Network (SIN), based in 28 countries around the world.

SIN India work to the following global objectives:

  • influence science and innovation policies of the Indian Government, industry and academia to benefit the UK
  • improve UK policy based on international experience and emerging opportunities and challenges with India
  • stimulate strategic science collaborations with India to benefit the UK and deliver wider policy goals
  • harness Indian technology partnerships and investment to grow UK innovation capability

Priorities

The priorities for UK engagement with India are set by the UK-India Ministerial Science and Innovation Council. The grand societal challenges agreed at the 1st UK-India Science & Innovation Task Force in February 2014 were: Sustainable Cities and Urbanisation; Public Health and Well Being and Energy-Water-Food Nexus. Both countries also agreed to focus on two cross-cutting capabilities: High Value Manufacturing and Big Data.

These grand societal challenges formed the basis for negotiating the Indian elements of the Newton Fund, to support the UK’s research engagement with developing countries. In November 2014, at the Council, UK and Indian ministers signed a Memorandum of Understanding to formalise the Newton Bhabha programme. The Newton Bhabha will further enhance science, research and innovation cooperation between the UK and India.
