Rail disruption following timetable changes on Northern and GTR
The impact on passengers, causes and actions taken to rectify the disruption.
A new rail timetable introducing thousands of new services to passengers across the network started on 20 May 2018. Since its introduction, passengers on Northern and GTR have encountered unacceptable levels of service.
It is our priority to work with the train operators and Network Rail to fix this as soon as possible and to ensure passengers are properly compensated for the disruption.
An independent inquiry will determine how this went wrong and ensure lessons are learnt to stop this from happening again.
The Transport Secretary will also investigate whether Northern and GTR have breached their contracts and will take action if either is found to have been negligent.
