Detail of outcome

The proposals were designed for tougher, more effective, sanctions to tackle the sale of illicit tobacco with a focus on targeting those small-scale regular offenders who play a key role in street level distribution.

This consultation sought views on proposals for new sanctions linked to the UK’s tobacco track and trace system and extending HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) traceability enforcement powers to Trading Standards officers.

We received 36 responses in total from the general public, representatives of businesses involved in the manufacture, distribution and sale of tobacco products, and other government departments, local authorities, enforcement agencies and public health groups.

The government has considered these responses and has published draft primary legislation and invites your comments. This consultation will run from 20 July to 14 September 2021.
