Apply for the Secure Stations Scheme
Guidelines for operators on applying for Secure Stations Scheme accreditation, the auditing process and making security improvements for passengers and staff.
Documents
Details
This Secure Stations Scheme guidance and the associated resource materials have been prepared to assist operators in making improvements to stations for the security of both passengers and staff. The documents contain information about gaining scheme accreditation and improving the physical environment and management of any station.
For stations that fall short of the scheme’s accreditation standard there is a category of ‘working towards accreditation’. This category recognises the efforts that are being made by some operators to get such stations to meet the standard, and provides them with the guidance and support to do so.
Background to the scheme
The Secure Stations Scheme represents a national standard for passenger safety and security on Britain’s railway stations. It has been fully refreshed to focus not just on crime but also on suicide prevention and the safeguarding of vulnerable people who use the railways. The scheme is jointly managed and administered by the Department for Transport and the British Transport Police (BTP). Officers in BTP’s Crime Reduction Unit carry out the station accreditations which last for 2 years.
Co-ordinating station security measures with other organisations
Station operators should also be aware of other rail security schemes which could affect them and the organisations they work with. These include:
- BTP’s Railway Safety Accreditation Scheme, which sets standards for railway organisations and employees to enable them to control anti-social behaviour
- the Office of Rail and Road’s safety certificates and authorisations which require mainline railway operators to comply with specific technical safety standards
