Details

This guidance relates to the planning of new combustion plants, at or over 300 Mwe capacity, and covered by the EU Large Combustion Plant Directive.

In particular, it details the relevant assessments that apply prior to new developments, that calculate the technical and economic feasibility of capturing, transporting and storing its CO2 emissions, and whether it is reasonable to expect that the proposed power station will be fitted with Carbon Capture and Storage in the future.

The outcome of the assessment may require space to be allocated at the new development that could accommodate future carbon capture equipment, so as to make the plant “carbon capture ready” (CCR). These assessments now form part of the development consent process in England and Wales. This guidance also features details on the kind of information that must be supplied by the applicant.
