Details

The Government has introduced the Electoral Registration and Administration Bill into the House of Commons. The Bill will tackle electoral fraud by speeding up the introduction of Individual Electoral Registration (IER) in Great Britain. It will also modernise our electoral registration system, making it more convenient for people to register to vote. The Bill also introduces a number of provisions that will make improvements to the running of elections.

The Government has listened and responded to the recent public consultation and pre-legislative scrutiny by making a number of changes to the original proposals. As a result the Bill contains more safeguards to ensure that as many eligible people as possible stay on the electoral register during the transition. It also means that we can focus on under-registered groups and those eligible to vote but missing from the register.

The Impact Assessments for Individual Electoral Registration, extending the electoral timetable for UK Parliamentary elections and the revised process for rejected postal votes have been signed by the Minister and copies have been placed in the House.
