Details
High quality infrastructure is essential for supporting productivity growth. Delivering the right infrastructure at a local, regional and national level, across the UK, is therefore key to the government’s long-term economic plan.
The National Infrastructure Plan (NIP) 2014 presents an overview of the government’s policies, investments and record on infrastructure delivery since 2010. The document identifies that over 2,500 different projects or schemes have been delivered in this Parliament. It also details the government’s approach to ensuring that the Top 40 priority investments remain on track to deliver, as well as providing the latest detail on the timing, funding and status of each of them.
For the first time, the NIP includes detailed delivery plans to 2020 in key economic infrastructure sectors. This includes information on new capital spending plans for roads and floods. An updated infrastructure pipeline, published alongside the document, provides details of planned projects and programmes across both the public and private sectors to 2020 and beyond.
The plan consolidates and builds on the progress already made by providing the clarity and visibility that industry, the supply chain and investors need going forwards. In addition to the pipeline, the document provides information on the government’s ongoing work to improve the planning, performance and delivery of infrastructure and addresses longer term challenges, for example by incorporating analysis of the financing requirements for our infrastructure.
The document is also accompanied by the following annexes:
- delivery annex – contains a comprehensive breakdown of delivery progress in each sector since 2010
- Top 40 update annex – provides key details of Top 40 priority infrastructure investments, including progress since NIP 2013 and future milestones
- performance indicators annex – presents performance indicators relating to key infrastructure sectors
- methodology and sources for NIP 2014 – includes information on the methodology and sources of analysis compiled for the document

National infrastructure pipeline
The NIP is published alongside the most robust, forward-looking infrastructure pipeline to date, which details the size and status of UK infrastructure projects, as well as having the most detailed regional breakdown yet.
For the first time the pipeline includes information on planned oil and gas investment, and a more focussed approach to identifying energy projects, which is consistent with the Electricity Market Reform delivery plan.
