Details

The oral health survey results of 3 year olds show:

  • 12% of 3 year olds in England (whose parents gave consent for this survey) had experienced dental decay

  • children had, on average, 3 teeth that were decayed, missing or filled (at age 3 most children have all 20 primary teeth)

  • the average number of decayed, missing or filled teeth in the whole sample (including the 88% who were decay free) was 0.36

This is the first national oral health survey of this age group. The survey collected dental health information from 3 year olds who attend private and state-funded nurseries, nursery classes attached to schools and playgroups across England.

The aim of the survey is to measure dental decay in children. Local authorities, the NHS and other partners can use the information to identify health inequalities.

Please note:

  • PHE used data for the North West from the academic year 2011 to 2012. This has been amalgamated with the data from the rest of England from 2012 to 2013.

  • PHE revised lower confidence interval data as of 14 January 2015. Previously published figures (first published on 30 September 2014) should be disregarded.
