The government welcomes the first independent review of the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) assessment published on 17 December 2014 by Paul Gray. This is the first of 2 independent reviews required by the Welfare Reform Act 2012. Paul Gray is also chair of the Social Security Advisory Committee.

The review made 14 recommendations and this government response addresses those identified as short term. It sets out the activity the Department for Work and Pensions will take in response and the wider work that is being taken to support PIP claimants through the assessment process.

We published the government’s second response covering the medium and long term recommendations on 26 November 2015. This also provides an update of the actions we have taken on the short term recommendations.
