Details

It is anticipated that a large proportion of existing self-employer Working Tax Credit claimants will be moving to Universal Credit as it continues to roll out. We commissioned this research to find out more about self-employed Working Tax Credit claimants and their work.

The research explored:

  • the characteristics of self-employed people claiming Working Tax Credit
  • why they became self-employed
  • their income, hours worked and business expectations
  • how self-employed people organised their work around other commitments
  • how those seeking to develop their business identified and secured support

This research will inform decisions around:

  • the optimal design of Universal Credit
  • the DWP offer to self-employed people claiming Universal Credit
