This publication covers the changes in the trends in nutrient nitrogen critical load exceedances, methodology and data.
Critical loads are thresholds above which certain pollutants cause significant harm to the environment through acidification and eutrophication (excessive freshwater algae growth due to nitrogen leading to lowered oxygen content). The pollutants come mainly from burning fossil fuels and waste from farm animals.
