This publication continues the monitoring of the impact of man made emissions of substances containing chlorine and bromine on the stratospheric ozone layer and ultraviolet UV radiation levels in the UK. In 1987, the Montreal Protocol sought to limit the production and consumption of the most important of these substances. Total levels of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in the lower atmosphere peaked in the 1990s. However, these substances have a long life in the atmosphere, and it is anticipated that recovery of the ozone layer will not occur until the middle of the 21st century.
