An update of official statistics on children living in out-of-work benefit claimant households, produced by the Department for Work and Pensions, was released on 16 October 2013 as part of the DWP statistical summary: October 2013.

These statistics show the numbers of children living in households in Great Britain where at least 1 parent or guardian claimed 1 or more of the following out-of-work benefits at 31 May each year from 2008 to 2012:

  • Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Employment and Support Allowance
  • Incapacity Benefit or Severe Disablement Allowance
  • Pension Credit

The tables published on this page also provide breakdowns of these statistics by country, region, local authority, constituency, output area and ward.

The main points from the latest release are:

  • there were 2.52 million children living in an out of work benefit household at May 2012
  • they represented 1.34 million households
  • figures represent a decrease of 25, 000 children or 1% since May 2011

By benefit type:

  • 1.43 million children lived in households claiming Income Support at May 2012
  • 535,000 children lived in households claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance at May 2012
  • 408,000 children lived in households claiming Employment and Support Allowance at May 2012
  • 316,000 children lived in households claiming Incapacity Benefit or Severe Disablement Allowance at May 2012

  1. Changed the title of 1 of the data tables from 'By output area, age and benefit type: number of children in out-of-work benefit households' to 'By output area and age: number of children in out-of-work benefit households' The table was incorrectly titled because DWP does not provide a breakdown by benefit type for output areas. No changes to the data have been made.
