This updates the provisional SFR released in October 2010 and contains revised national level analyses by school type, gender and subject and revised local authority level analyses by gender. Further tables are provided separately on the Department for Education statistics website only, including alternative local analyses, time series giving achievements in GCE A/AS level subjects, and achievements in GCE A level subjects by institution type and local authority.
The information in this SFR is based on data collated for the 2010 school and college (key stage 5) performance tables (formerly achievement and attainment tables), which has now been checked by schools, and covers achievements in all level 3 qualifications approved under section 96 of the Learning and Skills Act (2000). The Qualifications and Curriculum Development Agency (QCDA) tariff is used to calculate point scores for all level 3 qualifications.
Key points
- The average QCDA point score per candidate entered for level 3 qualifications in the 2009 to 2010 academic year was 744.8. This average is higher than the 2008 to 2009 year final figure of 739.3.
- The average level 3 point score per entry is equivalent to just above a grade C at A-level and has increased to 214.4, compared to an average of 211.7 in 2008/09. A grade C at A-level yields 210 points.
- 94.8 per cent of candidates achieved passes equivalent in size to at least 2 GCE/Applied GCE A-levels, compared with 95.1 per cent in 2008/09.
- 12.8 per cent of GCE/Applied GCE A-level candidates achieved 3 or more A* or A grades at A-level, compared with 12.7 per cent in 2008/09.
- Female students achieved higher average point scores than males. The average total points achieved by female students were 31.4 points higher (759.5 compared to 728.1 for males) and the average points per entry were 6.8 points higher (217.6 compared to 210.8 for males).
- A greater proportion of female students achieved 2 A-level passes or equivalent (95.6% compared to 93.9% for males), while there was little difference between males and females in the proportion achieving 3 or more A grades or above at A-level (12.8% for males and 12.7% for females).
