This publication includes estimates and commentary on:

  • trends in pensioners’ incomes (split by different pensioner groups)
  • sources of pensioners’ incomes
  • distribution of pensioners’ incomes

Data is based on estimates from the Family Resources Survey for financial year 2016/17, in which approximately 19,000 households were interviewed.

We’ve also published data tables in ODS spreadsheet format and a background information and methodology report.

  1. Data tables updated. In Table 3.1, wording has been corrected, for example benefit income has been corrected to occupational income, in Table 3.12, 2 headings have been changed from ‘All pensioner units’ to ‘All benefit units’ and a footnote has been added, and in Table 5.6, a footnote has been added which explains that values cannot be compared with previous publications due to a different methodology.
