This release is based on pupil-level absence data collected via the school census for the 2 terms combined. The release provides information on the levels of absence (authorised, unauthorised and overall) by type of school, absence by reason and summary statistics on persistent absentees.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • Across the 2 terms 3.4% of pupil enrolments were persistent absentees in state-funded primary schools and 6.8% of pupil enrolments in state-funded secondary schools.
  • Across state-funded primary and secondary schools, persistent absentees accounted for 24.7% of overall absence.
  • The overall absence rate in state-funded primary schools decreased, from 5.1% to 4.4%.
  • The overall absence rate in state-funded secondary schools decreased, from 6.5% to 5.7%.
